WHAT IS PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP)

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) has two components: Platelets, and Plasma.

Platelets are tiny blood cells that help your body form clots to stop bleeding. The platelets have growth factors and other cytokines that help stimulate the healing of soft tissue and encourage healing.

Plasma is the liquid portion of your blood. It is a protein and salt solution in which red and white blood cells and platelets are held.

Thus, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is plasma that has been manufactured to have higher doses of platelets than normal blood.

PRP is made from your body’s own blood. First, a vial of blood is drawn. That vial is placed in a centrifuge, where it is spun at a high speed. The spinning process separates the platelets from other blood cells. Then, the extra platelets (which hold the growth factors) are combined with the remaining blood and injected into the area being treated.

The growth factors are activated by adding thombin and calcium chloride.

HOW DOES PRP WORK FOR HAIR LOSS

When using Platelet Rich Plasma to treat hair loss, the PRP is injected directly into the scalp with a mechanical microneedling tool. The microneedling tool enables a series of ultrafine needles to prick the skin at a quick rate. These micro-punctures create controlled injuries to the scalp that are just large enough for the PRP to enter the skin, and enable the body to use its own healing mechagnisms to heal itself.

PRP is so effective for hair loss that its often called the “regenreative hair loss miracle”.

It is important to note that PRP can not grow hair where there is not an existing follicle. In such cases where there are no longer hair follicles, PRP can be highly effective when used in combination with a hair transplant.

BENEFITS OF PRP FOR HAIRLOSS

  • All natural solution
  • Lunchtime procedure
  • Requires only local anasthetics
  • Proven results for those with hair loss or alopecia

RESULTS OF PRP FOR HAIRLOSS

  • Thicker, fuller hair
  • Heathier, more youthful overall appearance

PRP VS HAIR IMPLANTS

PRP is not a replacement for hair transplants or implants. Although it works wonders on the parts of the hair with weakend follicles, it can not create hair follicles where there are none. Many patients chose to do PRP in addition to hair implants, as the combination of procedures is known to work well together.

IS PRP SAFE

Absolutely. PRP is formulated from your body’s own blood, and has been proven to be safe by the FDA for a variety of uses including physical injuries, skincare, and hair regrowth.

As a preventative hair loss treatment, PRP is amongst the safest, most technologically advanced, and most effective hair loss treatments available on the market today.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR RESULTS TO OCCUR

The first results will be that hair is no longer shedding or falling out. Slowly, the hair will start to look more dense. The full effects of PRP hair treatments can be seen over 3-6 months.

HOW MANY PRP SESSIONS ARE NEEDED

Depending on the severity of a case, a patient may require anywhere from 1-6 treatments to see new growth occur. Treatments are performed one month apart.

Once the desired outcome is acheived, a patient can expect to need a renewal session on an annual basis.

PRP CANDIDATES

PRP candidates are those with existing hair folicles who wish to strenthen the follicles, and increase the amount and length of hair.

Patients with small areas of alopecia areata also tend to have impressive results from PRP treatments.

PREPARING FOR YOUR PRP FOR HAIR LOSS PROCEDURE

You will be asked to avoid the following medications and herbs which may increase bleeding, and may cause bruising for at least two weeks prior to your PRP Treatment:

  • Any NSAIDs (such as Ibuprofen, Aleve®, Motrin®, Advil®, or Aspirin®)
  • Coumadin
  • Garlic
  • Ginseng
  • Ginkgo Biloba
  • Glucosamine
  • Fish Oil, and St. John’s Wort, high doses of Vitamin E, and Alcohol.

PRP FOR HAIR LOSS PROCEDURE

A PRP procedure to prevent further hair loss is relatively simple. We begin by drawing blood, and allowing the PRP to separate from the rest of the blood in the centifuge.

Then, we inject the PRP into the areas being treated with mechanical microneedling, which utilizes a series of ultra-fine needles to make 5-10 light injections per second in an area that is approximately the size of a dime.

A local anesthetic will be placed on the area prior to being treated but you will be fully awake and speaking during the procedure. A slight tingling feeling may remain for 1-3 hours after the procedure due to the anesthetic.

AFTER RECEIVING PRP FOR HAIR LOSS

Mild inflammation, redness, and numbness may be present for a few hours. After your PRP treatment you may shower and wash your hair as normal. Avoid the use of harsh chemicals for 72 hours.

As with most cosmetic treatments, we recommend that you not exercise directly following treatment as this will raise blood pressure and interfere with the product settling properly.

It’s important to avoid strenuous activities, like working out, or situations that would cause you to sweat profusely for 1 week following treatment as they may open the hair follicle.

Avoid alcohol, any non-prescribed blood thinners or NSAIDs such as Ibuprofen, Aleve, Motrin, Advil, Aspirin, and some herbs like St. John’s Wort, and high doses of vitamin E supplements for one week after treatment.
