WHAT IS A PDO THREADLIFT

The magic of a PDO ThreadLift lays in the kind of threads being used. PDO (polydioxanone) threads are synthetic fibers that have been widely used for surgery for over 20 years. These threads have prongs or cones on them allowing the threads to move in just one direction. When injected beneath the skin they pull the skin back, enabling it to keep the skin taught from the moment it is injected.

There are two basic types of threads:

Small threads measure a few centimeters that be placed virtually anywhere.

The other type is called a “Cogs” which are approximately 6-12cm in length and have small hooks on them that grip the skin and allow for pulling the skin against gravity. The Cogs are inserted in the skin via a blunt cannula (a technique we’ve been performing with dermal fillers for years) by making a small hole with a normal needle in the skin first.

The second component of magic in a PDO threadlift is that in addition to immediately lifting sagging skin, the PDO threads also cause your body to stimulate new collagen. Collagen is the body’s natural miracle for keeping skin smooth, tight, and supple.

The combination of the threads and increased collagen creates a tighter, plumper, more youthful look for up to 5 years.

HOW DOES A PDO THREADLIFT WORK

We start by carefully mapping out our desired results. By moving the skin with our fingers are able to show you the purpose of each thread and our intended results.

ThreadLifts are performed with a blunt-tipped candula needle. The needle is preloaded with a PDO thread and placed just under the skin at specific points on the face and neck to achieve the most effective lifting and tightening effect.

Once the thread is injected, you’re actually able to see the lift happen before your very eyes. Then, in addition, in about 10-14 days, the production of the body’s natural collagen an elastin begins resulting in further skin tightening.

PDO THREADLIFT RESULTS

ThreadLifts show immediate results that appear before your very eyes. Patients can achieve 30-70% of what an invasive face lift may achieve with no cutting or scarring. Well over 90% of ThreadLift™ patients report very satisfying lift results.

HOW DOES A PDO THREADLIFT COMPARE TO A SURGICAL FACELIFT

To understand the differences between a PDO ThreadLift and a traditional facelift, we first have to understand how the aging process works:

As we age and gravity takes its toll, the tissue in the cheek areas begins to descend. The heaviness produced from this descent can be in two main places:

First, excess tissue builds and forms a line between the nose and lips known as the nasolabial crease.

Second, bags begin to form near where the cheekbone resides, close to the eye.

Lastly, as the tissues of the face descend, the orbital bone (around the eyes) becomes more prominent.

This combination of changes all contribute to a less youthful appearance.

A traditional facelift will not address these issues properly. Although the cheeks may appear to look better immediately following a facelift, within a few months, they will have returned to their pre-procedure position. A facelift is primarily performed to improve the lower cheek, jawline and neck.

PDO ThreadLifts, on the other hand can be targeted to very specific areas of the face, including a precise cheeklift. Other options include a subperiosteal cheeklift to lighten the bags that form above the cheek bones, or below the eyes. Percutaneous cheeklifts can also be performed to address heavy cheeks that negatively affect the appearance of nasolabial folds.

As a ThreadLift is truly an art, a precise plan for each thread will be designed with you during a consultation.

IS A PDO THREADLIFT SAFE

At Estucia, safety always comes first. Every procedure we select to offer our patients is carefully researched and studied for effectiveness, often by our own research methods.

Because the PDO ThreadLift does not require cuts or incisions it is considered the safest alternative to a facelift on the market.

The PDO (polydioxanone) thread used in our facelifts is a medical grade product that has been used for suturing for over 20 years. It is safe, non-allergenic and is broken down naturally by the body over time without creating any scar tissue.

The PDO threads themselves stimulates collagen synthesis & provides skin tightening.

Another safety factor is that we are able to perform the facial treatment without general anaesthesia. You will be fully awake and talking to us comfortably under local anaesthetic, making this a much safer alternative to facelifts.

PDO THREADLIFT CANDIDATES

PDO Threadlifts are great for those looking for a minimally invasive “lift” procedure to immediately correct sagging or loose skin without scarring or much downtime. Patients are typically in the 30-65 age range. Many patients who have lost a substancial amount of weight after prolongued periods of weight gain are candidates for PDO ThreadLifts. Patients whose faces are very healy or thin are not ideal candidates.

If you’re looking to resolve loose or sagging skin, a PDO ThreadLift might be a solution for you. Depending on your age, skin condition, past procedures, the look you are aiming to achieve, and various other factors, a PDO ThreadLift may be for you. This varies on a case by case basis. The best way to get an accurate response is to have a one-on-one conversation with Dr. Ackerman.

HOW LONG DOES A PDO THREADLIFT LAST

The actual PDO threads in a PDO ThreadLift are absorbable and will be dissolved by your body in 6-8 months. The aesthetic effects, however, last for 12-18 months.

The results vary from person to person, depending on metabolism, water intake, and various other personal factors.

CAN A PDO THREADLIFT BE REVERSED?

Yes, the PDO threads are removable and reversible.

PREPARING FOR YOUR PDO THREADLIFT PROCEDURE

You will be asked to avoid the following medications and herbs which may increase bleeding, and may cause bruising for at least two weeks prior to your PDO ThreadLift:

  • Any NSAIDs (such as Ibuprofen, Aleve®, Motrin®, Advil®, or Aspirin®)
  • Coumadin
  • Garlic
  • Ginseng
  • Ginkgo Biloba
  • Glucosamine
  • Fish Oil, and St. John’s Wort, high doses of Vitamin E, and Alcohol.

It is best to remove makeup from the area being treated. We will gladly do this in office for you, however it is ideal if this can be done prior to treatment.

PDO THREADLIFT PROCEDURE

A PDO ThreadLift is one of the few procedures offered at Estucia that does require local anesthetic.

The procedure is performed with no knives or cutting. Once you enter our injection room, our cosmetic injector will meet with you, discuss your desired results, and create a course of action with you.

Each procedure takes approximately 1-2 hours depending on the number of sites treated.

AFTER RECEIVING A PDO THREADLIFT

The ThreadLift services offered in our Palm Beach offices have minimal downtime. Your face will continue to feel numb for a few hours. You can most often apply make up and return to work the next day. Depending on the patient and the extent of the procedure, you may experience mild to moderate swelling and bruising that last 1-10 days. Your skin will feel quite swollen and tight for 2-3 days after the procedure.

As with most cosmetic treatments, we recommend that you not exercise directly following treatment as this will raise blood pressure and interfere with the product settling properly.

It’s important to avoid strenuous activities, like working out, for 1-2 weeks following treatment.

To reduce the risk of facial cold sore recurrence that could be caused by needle punctures, talk with your healthcare professional about medications that may minimize the likelihood of an outbreak.

To decrease the risk of bruising and bleeding at the injection site you may use cold compresses to reduce swelling. Avoid alcohol, any non-prescribed blood thinners or NSAIDs such as Ibuprofen, Aleve, Motrin, Advil, Aspirin, and some herbs like St. John’s Wort, and high doses of vitamin E supplements for one week after treatment.
